TRANSPYR COAST TO COAST 2022

Revolution in TRANSPYR COAST TO COAST: in 7 stages from west to east and with 4 stages in France. It offers an unprecedented route for MTB modality, and Backroads cyclists have a unique opportunity to enjoy the mythical mountain passes of Le Tour de France. TRANSPYR COAST TO COAST revolutionizes its usual format and in 2020 will travel from west to east, starting on the French Basque Coast and ending on the Costa Brava after 7 exciting stages. After 10 years proposing a race through the valleys of the southern slope of the Pyrenees, with cyclists from all around the world and being considered one of the ten best MTB stage races in the world, TRANSPYR COAST TO COAST boost this remarkable change. Without leaving its coast to coast essence, revolutionizes the race proposing a new course. From the Cantabrian Sea to the Mediterranean. Leaving Saint-Jean-de-Luz to cross the Pyrennes from north to south, entering Spain through the Val d'Aran and ending in Roses.

The 2022 edition of TRANSPYR COAST TO COAST will be held from June 12th to 18th with the following stage locations: Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Bagnères-de-Bigorre, Vielha, La Seu d'Urgell, Camprodon and Roses.

The mountain passes of Le Tour de France await the Transpyr Backroads group

One of the great incentives that this revolution poses to the participants of Transpyr Backroads is, in addition to a completely new proposal, the passage through some of the most mythical mountain passes of the world cycling, in which authentic sports feats are written each year with the celebration of Le Tour de France. Marie-Blanque, Aubisque, Aspin, Peyresourde or the Colossus Tourmalet can be part of the program, in a race that could combine its essence of small, quiet and unknown roads, with the ascent to legendary mountain passes.

Transpyr Coast to Coast is, above all, a mission, a great personal quest consisting of crossing the Pyrenees in 7 stages. It is also an exciting and memorable cycling adventure in which its participants flow through different valleys, towns and cultures of the southern slopes of the Pyrenees, crossing and connecting Catalunya, Aragon, Navarre and Euskadi. Transpyr Coast to Coast tests both the physical and the mental limits of the most experienced and enthusiastic cyclists and is already one of cycling’s “must-do” events. Recognised by different magazines, including the National Geographic, as one of the 10 best MTB stage races on the planet, it is a challenge to face at least once in life.

Transpyr Gran Raid MTB crosses the Pyrenees by mountain bike. This event has caused a sensation and captivated the most demanding bikers and those hungry for new challenges. Transpyr Gran Raid MTB might be done individually, in pairs or trios, and now in relays. The route is followed via GPS, which allows for a more authentic experience of the Pyrenees. Each stage will have a timed section that, whenever possible, will match the entire stage. Course open to motorized traffic and the general public. TRANSPYR consists of 7 stages totalizing around 770 km and above 18.000 m of climbing, representing a daily average of over 110 km and about 2,600 m of climbing. Two other short and possible events are also available: EAST – the first 4 stages in France - or WEST-the remaining 3 stages in Spain-. The difficulty level of the three events GRAN RAID, EAST and WEST- can be classified as very high: it is aimed at riders with a very high physical and mental preparation, capable to link up to 7 stages with these characteristics, at an average overall speed rate of not less than 10 km per hour and above all, through ways including all kinds of trails and roads at times of low or no cyclability where where you should move on foot, push or carry the bike.

Transpyr will take place again with more than 400 cyclists wanting to live a unique adventure in the world and achieve the extraordinary experience of reaching the sea after seven days of authentic Mountain Bike.The participation is opened for teams of 2 people and, due to the great success of last year, individual participation modality is maintained.

In 2017 has been added the Transpyr Relay that offers you the chance to discover this unforgettable adventure in a more relaxed way with TRANSPYR C2C RELAY; the Transpyr relay format. So you can enjoy the wonderful landscapes of the Pyrenees and share this extraordinary mission with your group. It is designed to participate in a group of two (Transpyr Relay C2C 1X1)  Teams must be of 2 cyclists. Riding in solo (1×1) with a relay in the middle of each of the stages of TRANSPYR COAST TO COAST. – The teams can decide at each stage who start in the first relay and who in the second. And they must inform Race Office – the organization office – every morning before the start. -For participants in the 1×1 modality (teams of 2 cyclists, relay in solo) it will be compulsory to carry during the stage a geolocation device that they will have to rent to the organization in order to be able to take the start. – Only one change will be allowed during the stage and this will be done exclusively in the second food station, which is located approximately in the middle of the stage. When performing the relay, the incoming participants must carry the GPS of the outgoing participants to ensure that the organization can verify the route. In case of participating in Transpyr Relay C2C 1X1 modality they will also have to transfer the geolocator device in order to allow the organisation to monitor the position for safety reasons.

An other option, the E-Transpyr C2C, is for those pioneers who want to be the first to ride the Pyrenees from coast to coast on an e-bike. To allow the batteries to cover stages with an average of 100km of distance and 2,500 meters of elevation, the organisers of Transpyr Coast to Coast guarantee a charging point at the second feed zone and the transportation of spare batteries for those who already have one, while the owners of an ORBEA e-bike, the event’s official bicycle sponsor, will have a spare battery offered to them by the brand during the E-Transpyr C2C (Maximum speed assisted: 25km / h)

Transpyr 2020 will start in Saint-Jean-de-Luz (FRA) ending on the 20th in Roses after visiting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Oloron-Sainte-Marie, Bagnères-de-Bigorre (FRA), Vielha, La Seu d'Urgell, Camprodon along the way. The road and mountain bike modality coincide in time and stage towns, allowing riders to share experience at the end of each stage. Whit this rescheduling the participants will enjoy a milder climate and better accommodation. TRANSPYR is the culminating adventure for all long-distance biker. The organization shall have a timekeeping system for the timed section of each stage in order to give this information to participants. Where this is possible, the timed section of each stage will match the total length of this stage. A penalty system will be established. If a team of three members lose one of its participants, it will not be considered official Transpyr team anymore, but two individual participants.

To track the route you must use the GPS technology, which has proved very reliable and effective and avoids placing to many signs in the natural environment. Only at points of potential danger or problem the organization may decide to put signs of support. The organization provides aid stations with solid and liquid food along and at the end of each stage of TRANSPYR. These aid stations are intended to provide the necessary energy supply to cover the stage. Additionally the organization offers participants an evening meal of pasta (carbohydrates), coinciding with the briefing. A complete medical rescue service is present along TRANSPYR.

Participation in TRANSPYR is limited to 400 brave riders who will have the option of becoming the first finishers in the history of TRANSPYR TRAVESÍA DOS MARES. It is aimed at riders with a medium technical level and a high fitness, capable to link up to 7 stages with these characteristics, at an average overall speed rate of not less than 10 km per hour and above all, ready to enjoy the Pyrenees and the teamwork. In 2015 the 75% of all partecipants have become finisher. The organizing team speaks german, english and italian.

The route has been designed for experienced, physically fit cyclists. It generally follows small roads and paths. The organization will provide three (3) aid stations conveniently positioned during each stage, and one (1) at the end. These aid stations will allow participants to meet their nutrition and hydration needs along the route. In the evening, before the briefing for the next stage, the participants will be provided with a carbohydrate based meal also known as pasta party. To be classed as a finisher of TRANSPYR a participant will have to show evidence of attendance at each check point within the time limits established by the organisers, and completion of each stage along the designated route. The organization will establish controls points along the route of each stage, some of them at unknown locations. Departure and Arrival of each stage play the role of control points. Participants will have a route card for each stage. This must be carried at all times and stamped by the organization at the checkpoints. It is compulsory for all team members to be present at the same time at the each checkpoint. Participants must reach the checkpoints within the time limits set by the organisers. In the first 2 control points, the organization will set an indicative maximum time for the passage of the participants as a guide. If a team reaches the third checkpoint later of the time limit, its members will be transported to the finish of that stage by the organisers. Participants will be allowed to start next stage but will no longer be classified as a finisher of TRANSPYR.

EQUIPMENT
It is compulsory to correctly wear approved cycle helmets. Failure to follow this rule will lead to the expulsion from the event. All participants have to use a mountain bike in good condition. Each participant must carry the following: Route card, GPS device, thermal first aid blanket, whistle, emergency light, front and rear, mobile phone battery charged, spare batteries for the GPS (if working with them ), spare parts and basic tools for the bike (for punctures, broken chains and minimum allen key set) and a pint of drink. This baggage is checked at the signing in of each stage departure and participants may randomly get checked at the checkpoints. It is compulsory to wear the race number visibly on the front of the bike. All participants must wear a GPS device (GPS or GPS mobile mountain) that works correctly and displays the route provided by the organization allowing to clearly follow the track while riding.

Nutrition

The organization provides food stations with solid and liquid food along and at the end of each stage of TRANSPYR. However, given the challenging terrain in some sections, it is recommended to take some kind of supplement and/or energy bars for reinforcement, as well as starting the stage with at least one liter of liquid (water or energy drink). Additionally the organization offers to the participants an evening meal of pasta (carbohydrates), coinciding with the briefing.

Medical service

A complete rescue service is present along TRANSPYR. Its mission is to respond as quickly and efficiently as possible to those injured DURING THE COURSE OF THE STAGE. When the daily stage is finished, the participant that needs health assistance will be lead to the public or private local health assistance. Each participant is obliged to have a cycling license that will cover medical costs related to accidents during each stage. For other medical costs (illness, etc) we suggest booking a personal insurance.

Personal Luggage

Bag transport from stage to stage is included in the registration. The organization only carries the bag given during registration, to their accommodation -limited to the urban core of the stage town-. Weight is limited to 20 kg.

Should you opt to tackle the Road version, Transpyr Backroads proposes over 1,000kms of quiet back roads and 44 mountain passes to climb on your journey, with two route options varying in difficulty but both equally rewarding. In every stage there is a timed section. Although is not a competition, riders get a time list and celebrate their performance together with the whole group.

E-TRANSPYR

The E-Transpyr is done fulfilling the same regulations that Transpyr Coast to Coast, with the following differences:

1. Type of bicycle: The electric bicycles that can participate in E-Transpyr must meet the following requirements:

Only those that provide electric help when pedaling will be considered e-bike. It is not allowed the installation of mechanisms that run the engine without movement of the bottom bracket by the cyclist. All e-bikes that do not respect these premises will be considered mopeds for all purposes and cannot participate.

Maximum speed assisted: 25km / h. From this speed, the electric aid is switched off. The walking aid button allows the engine to be driven at a maximum speed of 6km / h, but mechanical or electrical mechanisms are not allowed to cancel the engine at 25km / h.

Maximum motor power: 250W.

Participants in the E-Transpyr may be required to undergo technical checks prior to departure and upon arrival. The organization might also perform surprise checks on the course.

2. Batteries: Because of the characteristics of the itinerary (length and especially elevation meters), a single battery doesn’t have enough autonomy in order to complete a Transpyr Coast to Coast stage. For this reason, we recommend bringing at least 2 batteries.

The organization will take this second battery (or as many as you want) to different food stations along the route. Each participant can choose in which food station (1, 2 or 3) want to have the battery or batteries, leaving it/them in one of the collection boxes appointed by the organization before the start of the stage.

3. Charging: The organization guarantees recharging points for the batteries in a few food stations. The participants who want to have his/her charger at these points should follow the same instructions as with the spare batteries.

It is not a duty of the organizers to recharge the spare batteries for the participants.

4. Departure time: Participants at the E-Transpyr  may take the start as group before or after the participants with normal bicycles. The organisation will inform about it in the briefings.

5. Finisher recognition: Participants at the E-Transpyr will not have the same Finisher recognition as participants in Transpyr Coast to Coast, although they will receive a memory of participation.
