Transandes Challenge in Cile - 01/ 2011

In 1998, the creation of the first TransAlp Challenge in Europe began with 220 teams of two riders from 8 different countries crossing the European Alps in 8 days. The arduous 580-kilometre long route with over 20,000 meters of climbing became the most challenging mountain bike event worldwide. There after, first annual TransRockies Challenge was held North America in August 2002, the organizer set out to challenge the incredible strength and determination of riders as they faced 7 days, 600 kilometers, and 12,000 meters of climbing. This race is still going strong today.

The TransAndes Challenge is organized as a wilderness mountain bike race, where participants sleep in tent villages that are set up prior to their arrival and broken down immediately after the start each morning. Participants will experience a temperamental mountain climate and the extreme physical challenges that come with racing the Andes. The second edition of TransAndes Challenge in 2010 was held through the Patagonian Andes from Chile to Argentina, South America.
The race is a "Team Endurance" event, with 6 demanding and spectacularly scenic stages of between 60 and 100 kilometers per day. The TransAndes Challenge is unquestionably a test of physical strength and mental determination. (For elite racers and for amateurs racers you can raced at your own pace). This unique mountain bike race is located in the heart of the stunning Patagonian Andes Mountains. There will be a maximum of 200 teams who, if they choose to accept the challenge, will race on single-tracks, jeep roads and technical terrain beginning and finishing in Pucón, Chile. We will go through 6 amazing Volcanos and 10 incredible lake in the heart of Andes Mountains. The race will take place from January 24th to January 29th of 2011 and will be to start from HUILO HUILO Chile and finishing to Pucón Chile, with the best ever singletracks you had riding in your life...!!!

The stages will include breakfast and dinner, and on stage 6 there will be a dinner for all participants, which will be a traditional Chilean barbecue. After the final stage, team times will be calculated to determine the overall winners of each category.

Patagonia is a geographic region containing the southernmost portion of South America. Located in Argentina and Chile, it comprises the southernmost portion of the Andes mountains to the west and south, and plateaux and low plains to the east. It excludes those portions of Antarctica claimed by both countries. East of the Andes, it lies south of the Colorado River. Westwards, it includes the territories south of 39º except for the Chiloé Archipelago. The Argentine portion of Patagonia includes the provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut and Santa Cruz, as well as the Tierra del Fuego archipelago from the homonymous province, and the southern tip of the Buenos Aires province. The Argentine politic-economical Patagonic Region includes the Province of La Pampa. The Chilean part of Patagonia embraces the southern part of the region of Los Lagos, and the regions of Aisén and Magallanes.

One of the main tourist centers in the Chilean Araucanía Region, the City of Pucón lies at the foot of the Villarrica Volcano, in the foothills of the Andes Mountain Range. Its urban center is located on the southern shores of Lake Villarrica, one of the first links of a long chain of lakes in southern Chile. Located 789 kilometers from the City of Santiago, it may be accesed along the Panamericana Route or through the Mamuil Malal Pass from Argentina. The leafy scenery and the attractive flowers that ornament the roads anticipate the beauty of Pucón. The city lodges 8,000 inhabitants and its history is marked by its Mapuche ancestors and the German colonists who populated the region and built the first hotels around 1928. It is an interesting city to visit any time of the year. The region has two national parks: the Huerquehue and the Villarrica. The latter is the home of the 2,847-meter-high volcano, one of the ten most active volcanos in the world, which has permanent fumaroles that may be observed from the urban shell. In the winter, ski and other winter sports are practiced on its slopes. In the summer, adventurers may climb to its very crater. The Trancura River and its rapids, the hot springs and the cultural richness of the area turn Pucón into one of the most visited cities in southern Chile
