| Graz is the capital of the federal state Styria and has approximately 250.000 inhabitants. The city lies in southern Austria and is easily accessible from all directions by motorways (A2 Südautobahn and A9 Phyrnautobahn) and railway. The start/finish area is set 10 km from the city centre of Graz, 5 km from the nearest motorway exit, 8 km from the Graz main train station and 30 km from the international airport Graz-Thalerhof.Ever since the European MTB Championships in Graz 2003, the largest ever with 31 participating nations, the Graz region has committed itself to the mountainbike sport. The Bikeclub Stattegg was one of the three organising clubs of the EC. The smooth organisation of this huge 10-day event, carried out on 4 different locations around the cultural capital Graz, was highly acclaimed by the participants, the spectators and the UEC alike. Since 2003 the Bikeclub Stattegg has organised large-scale Marathon events annually. Now that the Stattegg village centre is being revitalised and the mountainbike tourism in the Graz region has expanded under the motto bikeCULTure even further, the time has come to take up the challenge of the 2009 UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE MARATHON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS (Sunday, 23 August 2009). | |

Mountainbike destination. Since 1998, Styria can boast the world’s longest continuously signposted Mountain Bike Route, the Alpentour Steiermark. Under the name Alpentour Austria the route has been extended to Vienna, now encompassing 1,700 km in 27 tour legs. In the Graz region the race courses of the European Championship 2003 were made into permanent sport sites as early as 2002. In addition to positioning the city as a culture city (European Cultural Capital 2003), the Graz region places a strong emphasis on cycling tourism. Under the ‘brand name’ bikeCULTure.at, an ambitious plan has been developed to continue to expand the mountain bike offer. | |
