MTB Festival Schladming-Dachstein/Final Race Report Alpentour Trophy/3-6 June 2010 - Mountain Bike Fever in Schladming

For four days the Schladming-Dachstein Region was all about mountain biking. The 12th International Alpentour Trophy was held and included an exciting supporting program ranging from Downhill Dual Slalom to Unicycle-Marathon, concerts, festivities up at the Alpine lodges around Schladming, as well as guided E-Bike-tours. The title of the prestigious stage race was claimed by Carinthian Uwe Hochenwarter, the fastest Elite woman was Natalia Krompets from the Ukraine.

With three out of for possible daily stage wins, Uwe Hochenwarter was the dominating rider of the Alpentour Trophy 2010. The 24-year old Carinthian rider from the Muskelkater Genesis Team took the early lead on day one and didn’t let go of it until the final stage and thus secured his so far biggest success of his mountain biking career. His team mate Matthias Leisling from Germany set the seal on the outstanding result of the Austrian elite team with his third overall place. Belgian rider Bjorn Brems from Team G-Skin Deforche claimed the silver trophy and was responsible for making the final stage involuntarily suspenseful due to a mechanical defect of his bike. The Ukrainian rider Natalia Krompets claimed the Elite Women’s category title rather confidently: The national team rider prevailed ahead of her 17-year old fellow team rider Yana Belomoyna on all four days. Third was Latvian Lelde Tipane (Team Rietumu-Delfin) and the Austrian with the best result was Styrian Theresie Kellermayr from the Team Janger Simplon in fourth place.

Overall, 225 riders from 17 nations in various categories completed the four strenuous stages across the mountain ranges of Hochwurzen, Reiteralm, Ramsau and Hauser Kaibling and completed 247 kilometres and more than 9,500 m of elevation. With frosty temperatures and heavy rainfall causing the most difficult track conditions that got to the riders, luckily the meteorological tide turned throughout the race. The summerly temperatures not only made the athletic part of the event easier. Riders also found no trouble to complete their recovery and regeneration units in the comfy outdoor restaurants and coffee bars of Schladming with the surrounding mountain ranges of Schladminger Tauern and Dachstein presenting themselves in their splendour.

Unicycles, Downhill, Marathons
The supporting program around the Alpentour Trophy was more multifaceted than ever. It included every mountain bike application possible these days, but also a live concert by the band Uptown Monotone that was worth listening to, as well as a movie night. Hobby-mountain bikers who thought that the four stages in a row would be a bit too much for them, were able to participate in the race event in two individual marathons. The Gerhard Schönbacher Classic, as part of the Trek MTB-Challenge, as well as the Schladming MTB Grand Prix, included in the Top Six-Series, attracted almost 500 more athletes to the MTB Festival. Clearly more comfortable were the interactive E-Bike-Tour offers to head up to the finish of the daily mountain stages. Participants could cycle up onto 2,000 m of elevation more or less without being drenched in sweat. There the excited riders were not only able to experience the many hot position fights and spectacular overtaking manoeuvres, but also took pleasure in the festivities held at the Alpine lodges and were spoilt with music and culinary delicacies. In contrast quite spectacular were the supporting events of the gravity categories: the Midsummer Night Dual Slalom had daring downhill racers compete one-on-one down the finishing slope of the Planai World Cup Ski-Piste. Florian Wilhem emerged victorious from the direct duels over three jumps and through 14 gates. No less fast-paced was the Unicycle-Downhill event including 2.9km/550m elevation starting at the intermediate station “Mittelstation” Planai – Ziga Sternad decided the race in his favour with a time of only 6:27.85.

All in all the more than 700 participants at the MTB Festival in Schladming-Dachstein experienced four exciting and varied days in the high alpine backdrop, which is beyond competition. Probably also good cause for many elite and amateur mountain bikers to make plans already on the finishing line to come back next year…
